The History of the Cadogan Hotel in London

The History of the Cadogan Hotel in London

On April 6, 1895 Oscar Wilde sat slouched in a comfortable chair in Room 118 of the Cadogan Hotel in London, drinking hock and seltzer. He knew the police were coming to arrest him. He also knew that he could escape – to Paris or America. But he refused to flee. So it was in that room that Inspector Richards found him and took him into custody on charges of “committing acts of gross indecency with other male persons”. The brilliant author and playwright (The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Importance of Being Earnest) had just lost a lawsuit against the Marquis of Queensberry, whose son, Lord Alfred “Bosie” Douglas, had become Wilde’s lover.

As Wilde left the Cadogan in his long, black frock coat and silk hat, his entire life started to slide downhill. He was not allowed bail and remained in prison until his arraignment. Found guilty, he spent the next two years in prison at hard labor. Neither his work nor his health ever recovered and he died November 30, 1900.

The Cadogan Hotel in Sloane Street in Knightsbridge now offers a a stay in Room 118, the “Green Carnation” package named after the dyed flowers Wilde always wore in his buttonhole. The package includes a complimentary bottle of Wilde’s favorite pink Perrier-Jouet and a three course meal in the Langtry Restaurant, named after the 18th century actress and contemporary of Wilde’s, Lillie Langtry.

The history of the Cadogan Hotel in London is not limited to Oscare Wilde. The Queen Anne style building dates from 1887 and at one time was owned by Lillie Langtry, the most famous (and infamous) actress of her time. She sold the building in 1892, but continued to live in her own room, Room 109, when the house became a hotel until 1897. The beautiful actress had many paramours in her time, including the Prince of Wales, who later became King Edward VII.

She was the official Royal Mistress and her husband, Edward Langtry had no choice but to follow protocol. During an off period in her on-again, off-again relationship with the king, Lillie had an affair with his nephew, Prince Louis of Battenburg with whom she had a daughter. King Edward often visited her at the Cadogan Hotel, although he had a suite set aside for this purpose.

Special packages are also available for stays in the both the Lily Langtry (Lily was how the American’s spelled her name) Suite and the King Edward VII Suite, both decorated in the style of the period.

In 2011 the Earl of Cadogan bought the hotel that bears his family’s name and the hotel was shut down for renovation in 2014. It will reopen in 2016 with its history and its stories polished off and ready for viewing.
